Reversal of Fortune - A Question About Revenge

by

Robert D. Waterman

AFNTP Member's Question

I am concerned that there is a culture of revenge around the world in many countries. I want to know how this "zeitgeist," or spirit of times (or ages), influences and effects the noetic field? Since this belief is translated through media, family, religion, etc.; when we are facing this as practitioners, do we treat this any differently than any other perturbations?

Robert's Answer

We have a natural drive to make be whole. Revenge is a reversal of that. Usually it is sufficient in a balancing to say: "I forgive myself for believing I need revenge to make my self whole in terms of ________." A question I ask myself as a test for revenge is: "Am I responding to a person who is acting against my interest in a way that challenges their behavior or attacks them?" For example, I may feel that my honor has been offended. I have some choices. I can retaliate or I can represent the truth about myself. Ultimately, only love makes whole. Our simple judgments of others are for the most part revenge. The present focus of our judgment is taking the rap for a past incident of injury. The current offense is a reaction of revenge to "balance" a past transgression.

Zeitgeist is a "spirit of the times." It is an expression of the "folk soul," or soul of a people. In a recent class I did in Germany it appears as a force the held a perception in place. It was like what I call an implant that was enforced in the psyche that "to be worthy you must achieve, or excel." A stronger statement was: "to be worthy you must dominate or rule over others." I came upon this particular version when we were working on status quo, or culturally embedded, beliefs that predispose us to look outside our selves for confirmation. After the second day of the class, there was something in my aura that was not right. When I asked, I heard the word: "zeitgeist." I recognized it from my sociology. When I repeated the word, the force that was permeating my aura cleared. The spirit was in my aura from working with the class' status quo issues with the class. Status quo issues are from the basic self needing to preserve one's sense of self. Being self defined by the status quo is usually competitive with enlightenment. In its natural function the zeitgeist translates time as everywhere the same. It is one. Time is now. Past and future are a dimension of that present. Time spirits give us our sense of history, of linear cause and effect. The ego sense of time and deeds making us worthy or unworthy is a co-option of the time spirit. The spirit says to us: history is power, rather than history is an art project through which we explore ourselves and make meaning. In this case, the time spirit had become an implant, a force that controlled, rather than a media of perception.

What to do? We can clear the spirit of revenge or the zeitgeist. We forgive a belief or judgment about revenge or spirit of the times.

The discussion centers around looking for the underlying predisposition to perceive, think or act a certain way. It is on the level of promoting or allowing. We look deeper than the stratum of belief, to the stratum of pre-thought or thought control as an archetypal foundation of our sense of reality.

Simply stated: As practitioners we have a soul agenda to actualize our wholeness. Only love can fulfill that. We always look for love to lead the way for any response or assessment we make. As practitioners the only concerns that matter are those that manifest in the moment with the client, on in the classroom with the student. We are always our first client.
